Drug Discovery and Bioassay Research Division

Natural Products Research Section

Local multinational pharmaceutical companies, including Bangladeshi companies, produce about 98% of the drugs for local demand, all of which are generic drugs. Bangladesh does not have its own medicine. This section deals with research on separation, purification and identification of drug leads from natural sources such as plants, fungi, lichens, marine algae and sponges with the goal of developing new drugs.

Bioassay Research Section

Determining the specific efficacy of drug leads obtained through various methods is an important step in drug discovery. In this process, the efficacy of drug leads is tested using in-vitro methods. This section deals with the determination of specific efficacy using in-vitro methods before evaluating the efficacy of drug leads in animal models or the human body.

Preclinical Study Research Section

Bioactive compounds are tested in animal models to assess their efficacy in the human body. This section deals with evaluating the various pharmacological activities of bioactive compounds in animal models and identifying potential adverse effects (side effects)

Synthetic Biology Research Section

To conduct biotechnology-based drug research, this section focuses on the production and purification of important molecules that can be used as drugs within living cells using techniques such as DNA editing, gene insertion, and cloning.
